Start every task thinking how to do it better than it has ever been done before. “Start a crusade in your life to dare to be your very best” (William Danforth). Become a yardstick of quality. Do the right thing regardless of what others think.
“It is a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it” (Somerset Maugham). Think only of the best, work only for the best and expect only the best. Excellence is never an accident. “There is a way to do it better . . . find it” (Thomas Edison).
There is always an excellent way of dong everything. “Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself” (Henry Ward Beecher). Most people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.
“It is those who have this imperative demand for the best in their natures and those who will accept nothing short of it, that holds the banners of progress, that sets the standards, the ideals for others” (Orsen Marden).
Excellence measures a man by the height of his ideals, the breadth of his compassion, the depth of his convictions and the length of his persistence. People will always determine your character by observing what you stand for or fall for.
Don’t seek success. Instead, seek excellence, and you will find both. Work to become, not to acquire. Do the very best you can, and leave the results to take care of themselves. People are funny; they spend money they don’t have, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t like. Success is not found in achieving what you aim at but aiming at what you ought to achieve.
Perfection, fortunately, is not the best alternative to mediocrity. A more sensible alternative is excellence. Striving for excellence rather than perfection is stimulating and rewarding; striving for perfection in practically anything is frustrating and futile.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. “Excellence demands that you be better than yourself” (Ted Engstrom).
Be easily satisfied with the very best. When you are delivering your very best is when you will feel most successful. Never sell your principles for popularity or you will find yourself bankrupt in the worst way. Dare to be true to the best you know.
